Projects / Scotland's Gift to Derry
'An Turas/The Voyage'; commissioned by the Scottish Government as a gift from Scotland's people to the people of Derry, UK Capital of Culture 2013. This piece was presented by Scottish Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop to the Mayor of the City and the Taoiseach, as part of a musical event composed and directed by Jim Sutherland, marking Columba’s journey from Ireland to Scotland.
An Turas takes the form of a concertina fold scroll, with the music included on an inlayed memory stick, all contained in a bespoke box. The artwork is in linocut, taking inspiration from a 6th century gaelic poem.
These images document the process of making the work, which is now held in collections with Scottish and Irish Governments, City of Derry and Creative Scotland.
